Not just that, but this started as a basic model car.   I’d leave off the 5.6 (which I assume is from a Nissan) and really surprise people.

This is actually Carlos Granados’ (the owner of Stuttgart Auto Service out in Walnut) personal project car. He’s pretty fanatical about keeping it “all Benz” so IIRC he started with an M273 block and heads. I could be wrong, but I don’t think there’s any M117 much in it. Modern ignition and fueling, lowered-and-stiffened suspension. it’s a pretty wild ride wrapped up in a gangster’d old S-class.  Not my cup of tea, but he turns up at these events and has a blast with it.  He’s a great guy BTW.  I’d have my German stuff out at his shop to be worked on if we weren’t on opposite ends of LA.

OTOH, I have no such biases on “purity” of bloodlines.  I’ve got a Nissan VK45 V8 out here at the shop that might end up in a W123 shell that’s sitting here-- or a W201.

A 280S would have been born with a carb’d I6 - all V8 108s were SE cars. I like his way of thinking, but I’d have left off the 5.6 (off a Titan or Armada I bet) badge and let people think it is still the smooth little I6 under the hood.

I have no problem with swaps and modified cars either. Most of these old cars are low value, and would be rotting in a field or at the scrapyard if someone wasn’t tinkering with them.  Back in the day I saw a few 123s with Ford 302s under the hood.

Over the years I’ve toyed with some mods or making my own W111 into something different, but the car is too much of a survivor, and I don’t want to mess it up. If I had the money I’d restore rather than custom.

Yeah, I completely agree. Anything earlier than, say, W123 or C/R107 it just feels “wrong” to mess with a classic old car—

OTOH, they built SO many W123s, and they are so common, getting crazy with them seems OK.

I’m sure Carlos’ 280S was a junk-ish roller so have no issues with “what the hell” on it.

Even for older models, values are so low and restoration costs so high, that many are just rotting away, and sometimes it takes someone who might not keep a car 100% stock to keep it on the road. I have seen numerous modified 108/109s, 114/115s, and even fintails. I don’t have a problem with it, as it keeps the cars away from the crusher, and even might aid in a “cool” image - I know from having my fintail for so long, they have a larger following than in the past, and the custom group helps with that.

No doubt Carlos kept a heap from hitting the point of no return, which is a good thing.
